The origin story of Dopplio: how an internal tool helped us scale our company, get acquired, and create a new game-changing product.

The backstory

Prior to Dopplio, my wife and I operated a recruiting company in the healthcare niche.

While running our business, we discovered that personalized videos increased our response rates by 3x. However, the process of creating these videos was both time-consuming and exhausting.

My wife would spend about two hours every day just to make 20 videos, which, while exhausting, were still high-converting and worth the effort.

However when she became pregnant, the toll was too much and she requested a solution.

The key insight

Analyzing our videos, we realized that 90% of that "personalized" feel came from two things:

1. Saying the person's name

2. Starting the video on their LinkedIn background

Besides those two things, the remaining bulk of the video was the same for a given group.

We searched for existing solutions, but everything at the time either:

  • looked too robotic to sell

  • didn't offer the ability to insert multiple backgrounds

  • was unnecessarily expensive

So we got started coding, and a few days later had a python script running.

The prototype

All this script did at the time was:

1. insert an audio clip of us saying a different name at a specific moment in a pre-recorded video, which we hid with a subtle "hand-wave" to hide the speaker's mouth in that moment (scrappy but effective)

2. insert the prospect's LinkedIn into the background

3. insert the prospect's careers page into the 2nd background

Here's an example video:

This system was so effective we used it for over a year, generating over half a million dollars in new business and leading to numerous successful bookings.

Recognizing we had something valuable

Not only was this simple 30-second video more effective than any of our email campaigns, but it even garnered compliments from prospects who appreciated the personalized approach:

Not long after our successful implementation of this video automation, other businesses began asking us for it, leading us to develop Dopplio as a standalone product.

Today, Dopplio makes it easy for companies across various industries to create personalized, engaging videos.

Our platform allows users to input a CSV with prospects' info, and automatically generate thousands of professional, custom videos.
